From a biographical sketch of G. Philip Cartwright, Encyclopedia of Special
Education
(1987):

In the 1960s, Cartwright became convinced that the American education
system was not providing an adequate education for handicapped children.
He attempted to implement the then heretical idea of training regular
educators to identify handicapped youngsters in their early years and to
help those youngsters to succeed in a regular classroom.  Cartwright also
proposed that the training of both regular and special education teachers
be modified to include learning the use of alternative training approaches
(Cartwright, 1977).  One such approach is the use of computer technology
in the process of training teachers.  With this philosophy, Cartwright
developed a series of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) courses.

Excerpt from a commentary on adults who give care to their children as well
as their parents:

…you seem to have begun to realize that you can do everything for a
parent and “it is never enough.”  It never will be in her eyes, but you can do
what you can do -- and let the rest be.  We are not children whose hands
need to be held when we cross the street.  We hold onto the hands of those
who need our help now.  At some point, all of us have to make decisions
about the best care to give our loved ones, and  there will always be
someone who thinks we have made the wrong decision.  Perhaps we did.
Most of us, however, do the best we can at each and every moment.
This is not to say that each and every decision is the world’s best.  We all
have times when we are sick or tired, or buy or whatever.  We Have
moments when we have so much on our minds we get befuddled.  Even at
those times - especially at those times - we make the best decisions we can,
given the circumstances.  If we all waited until we were feeling good, had
money, had time, had sleep, or whatever we think we need,, we would
probably still be wearing animal skins and living in caves!  The only people
who seem to think they can solve the problems of the world are
adolescents. The world has stressed out the adults in charge and we can
only do what we can do.
